The wall becomes part of the sign

Architectural lettering.
A quieter kind of impact.

Halo-lit lettering does not light up the face. It casts light behind individually fabricated letters, allowing a metal silhouette to stand away from its background. Also called reverse channel or rear-illuminated lettering, it gives depth without turning the whole sign into a luminous panel.

The effect is a partnership between the letter and the wall. Smooth pale stone reflects differently from brick, gloss tiles or charcoal paint. We consider the finish, stand-off, LED layout and surrounding lighting together so the sign belongs to the space, not just to the artwork.

Bronze & brass-effect lettering

A warm metal face makes a statement before the LEDs are switched on. Brushed bronze, brass-effect finishes and specified metal treatments pair with rear illumination for an identity that feels integrated into the architecture. The face stays opaque: the light belongs to the wall behind it.

Where it works
Behind reception, at a hospitality arrival point or on a material-led interior feature wall.
Good for
Brands that want understated depth, warm lighting and a finish that rewards a closer look.
Our suggestion
Compare real finish samples in daylight and evening light. Agree a protective finish, cleaning method and LED sample against the actual wall.
Construction & specification notes
  • Solid metal and decorative metal-effect finishes are different specifications; agree the actual construction.
  • Brushed direction, sheen and patina tolerance should be confirmed with a physical sample.
  • Warm-white LEDs are a starting point, not a promise of identical colour on every surface.

The details behind the impression

Beautiful on the outside.
Thought through within.

01

A metal face worth looking at

Brushed, polished or powder-coated faces define the daytime identity. Grain direction, return depth and fine logo details are considered before illumination. Approve the actual material and finish rather than relying on a photograph.

02

A halo shaped by the wall

Stand-off and LED layout influence the light spread. Dark paint absorbs light; rough masonry can break up the outline; glossy surfaces can reveal reflections. A sample against the intended finish is more useful than a universal brightness promise.

03

Concealed now. Accessible later.

Agree the cable entries, wall penetrations and driver location before manufacture. Concealed wiring should still be serviceable. A coordinated backplate may simplify assembly where multiple individual entries are unsuitable.

Where, when & why

For the places that deserve
a second look.

Flagship retail & shopfronts

On a refined fascia, at a store entrance or behind the service desk. Metal lettering gives the brand a daytime signature; a restrained halo supports evening visibility without lighting the whole frontage.

Corporate receptions & interiors

On a reception wall, within a meeting floor or in a branded lobby. A clean silhouette communicates permanence. A backplate can help coordinate wiring and keep the light surface consistent across locations.

Before we make it

Halo-lit lettering FAQs.

0208 150 3330
01What is halo-lit or reverse channel lettering?

LEDs inside a dimensional letter aim backwards onto the mounting surface. The face is normally opaque; the reflected light outlines the letter. Halo-lit, rear-illuminated and reverse-lit describe this effect. Face-lit lettering illuminates the front instead, while dual-lit lettering combines both.

02Will halo lighting work on our brick, stone or dark wall?

It depends on the finish, colour and texture. Rough surfaces can break up the glow; dark surfaces may absorb more light and reflective finishes may reveal hotspots. Send a wall photograph and material details. A coordinated backplate can create a more controlled surface where appropriate.

03How far off the wall do the letters sit?

There is no one correct stand-off for every sign. Letter depth, LED arrangement, wall finish and the desired spread determine the clearance. We agree the mounting detail after reviewing the actual artwork and site rather than promising a universal gap.

04Can you make small letters and fine logos?

The smallest practical size depends on stroke width, letter depth, material and the selected LEDs. Fine strokes or separated details may need adaptation or may remain unlit. Vector artwork and the intended viewing distance help us review the design before quoting.

05Which LED white colour is right for us?

Warm white around 2700–3000K is often a starting point for hospitality; neutral white around 4000K can suit contemporary interiors. Cooler white, static colour or RGB may be considered with the appropriate system. Confirm availability and judge a physical sample against your wall and surrounding light.

06Can we dim the halo or use coloured LEDs?

Dimming, static colour and RGB are specification options, not assumptions. LEDs, drivers and controllers must be compatible and agreed before manufacture. Exterior brightness or operating hours may also be restricted by the site approval.

07Are halo letters suitable for outdoor use?

They can be designed for exterior settings, subject to exposure, materials, cable entries, fixings and the complete electrical assembly. An IP-rated component does not certify the whole sign. Confirm weathering, corrosion risk and servicing access for the location.

08Who supplies power and connects the sign?

The agreed sign package can include LEDs, compatible drivers and internal low-voltage wiring. Building mains supply, isolation, final mains connection and certification are the client’s qualified electrician’s responsibility, not included as general building electrical work by Clever Signs. Agree responsibilities and access before installation.

09Do we need consent and how is maintenance handled?

Exterior advertisement consent, landlord approval or listed-building consent may apply. We also plan driver access and a safe route to service the sign. Keep approved artwork, setting-out and the LED specification for future maintenance or additional sites.

10What do you need to quote halo-lit lettering?

Send your vector logo, approximate letter height or overall width, quantity, wall photographs, site location, finish preference and target date. Tell us about the surface, installation access, power position and any existing approvals.
